European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR)
Statement of Piotr Borkowski, Executive Director at EUSTAFOR:
“The European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR) welcomes an invitation by the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) to become an Ambassador of the “Biomass Counts” campaign, launched by AEBIOM in December 2014. Bioenergy currently represents 60% of the EU’s total consumption of renewables. The majority of bioenergy is generated from biomass that originates from sustainably managed forests. It can be used for heating, electricity generation and transport fuels. Currently, woody biomass from forests and residues is the largest source of renewables in Europe, and its share is expected to grow by 2020. Wood for use as an energy source comes not only from final tree harvesting but also from thinning and other sustainable forestry practices. Wood for energy use may also be derived as a by-product from downstream processing in wood-based manufacturing, for example as off-cuts, trimmings, sawdust, shavings, wood chips or by-products of the pulp industry (e.g. black liquor). End-of-life wood and paper products may also be used as a source of energy (recovered wood). Around 42% of all the mobilized woody biomass supply in the EU is used for energy purposes.” Read more here.
